An Evening At The Pictures: IndiEarth On Screen

“Pinguli is an old village on the Konkan coast, about 32 km north of Goa. Here, a unique Thakur community of sixty families has preserved for hundreds of years, three different folk forms.”

This is just one of the many enticingly colourful stories that will be told, at the upcoming edition of IndiEarth On Screen happening in Chennai, on the 4th and 5th of September. The evening will weave through tales of the nomadic puppeteers of Rajasthan with Mani Kaul, in The Nomad Puppeteer; trace the origins of the art of animation in India through R. Swamy’s Glimpses of Indian Animation; recount – through Satyajit Ray’s Inner Eye – the trials and tribulations of Binode Bihari Mukherjee, an accomplished painter who lost his sight but continued to create his art using his inner visions; and offer unique glimpses into the inner workings of artists like M.F. Hussain in Santi P. Chowdhury’s A Painter Of Our Time: Hussain. 

Many alluring tales to be told through the medium of independent film, over the course of two evenings at the Lalit Kala Akademi – spanning a variety of genres from documentaries to shorts, features to animations. Bringing Chennai’s non-mainstream film community together, IndiEarth OnScreen aims to showcase offbeat works of cinema to more audiences across the city and the country.

The evening will also include the works of filmmakers like Gayatri Rao, RV Ramani, and Nandita Jain.
