Cinema and Music: Live At Tango!
“Blindness is a new feeling, a new experience, a new state of being”.
– Binode Bihari Mukherjee
At the age of 54, the way artist Binode Bihari Mukherjee saw the world would change forever. An accomplished painter, he was one of the earliest pioneers of Indian modern art and one of the first artists to showcase the mural as a form of artistic expression. He also taught at Rabindranath Tagore’s Shantiniketan – where he would find a student in budding filmmaker Satyajit Ray. However in a rather dramatic twist of fate, Mukherjee lost his sight after an unsuccessful cataract operation – and spent the rest of his life using his inner eye to create his art. In a beautifully moving short documentary titled Inner Eye, former student Satyajit Ray captures the life and times of the artist and the subsequent reinvention of his creative process – a film that will be screened at the upcoming IndiEarth On Screen happening at Tango in The Legends Hotel, Chennai.
In addition to this film, IndiEarth will be screening a selection of classic documentaries by other prominent filmmakers included Santi Chowdhary and Santosh Gaur – handpicked from the Films Division archive. Also being screened is a fresh new documentary selected from the IndiEarth XChange 2014 films line-up – The Confluence by Shantanu Kakde. More details on the films available here.
But it’s not just cinema – when Friday night rolls around, Live at Tango – IndiEarth’s latest gig property in the city – will take over the night, featuring music that moves into the realm of funk, RnB, a pinch of Latin and Carnatic inspired rhythms with Chandbibi and The Waste Candidates. The Bangalore based act comprises Mana Dhanraj (Vocals), Sidhant Jain (Guitar), Kavita Sarna (Bass) and Navneet Rao (Drums) bringing together the ‘strange and beautiful’. With sultry jazzy influences that bleed into several other inspirations and genres, their sound is a potent cocktail of influences ideal to sip on on a breezy Friday night. This week, it just takes you to Tango – simply show up to Chennai’s newest addition to the live venue circuit for an exciting line up of alternative music performances and independent film screenings.
