DIY Musicians Campaign: And The Winners Are…
After receiving an overwhelming response to our DIY Musicians Campaign with entries coming in from every corner of the country, and from genres equally as diverse, picking a winner proved to be quite a task. But what is truly exciting is the sheer diversity of independent talent that is being produced all around the country today, made clear by all of your entries.
From all the submissions we received, two talented independent artists have been selected as the winners. They are Singzu Joint from Imphal, Manipur, and Awkward Bong from Mumbai.
When describing the band’s music, Eroz Laishram of Singzu Joint says, “We never wanted a lengthy description about ourselves, by ourselves. The music should speak for itself. The music we play and the lyrics we write, they’re all about personal freedom – so there’s one quote we live by that summarises it all: We envy not the kites with strings, but the birds with wings.”
The band’s track Fly – Athoubi Emagi Macha is being digitally distributed worldwide by IndiEarth. “We never thought we could win this campaign,” says Eroz. “We accidentally just stumbled upon it online one day and decided to submit our music. We are grateful to IndiEarth for everything they’re doing and helping us gain this recognition — it offers a platform for DIY Musicians like us to get exposure”.
“Awkward Bong is a bit of a bedroom project that came out of not having anything to do at two in the morning,” says Ronit Sarkar aka Awkward Bong. “All these songs – including Home Alone – are written for guitar and voice. The electronic element came in after I’d seen The xx perform — I came back from their concert in just a totally different space, and went with that!“ His track Home Alone is also being digitally distributed worldwide by IndiEarth. “It feels really cool – it’s encouraging knowing that insomniacal (is that a word?) music can amount to something if you decide to take your chances with it, put it on record, and put it out.”
Being digitally distributed worldwide is just one of the many opportunities that these two artists are now eligible for, as part of the IndiEarth community.
