IndiEarth OnScreen: Cinematic Tales In Three Cities

In the words of James Dean, “Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today”. We all have dreams, some big, some small, some within reach, some perhaps a touch more far fetched than others. Tajou’s dream was not quite like many other ten-year-old Japanese boys his age – his dream was to be the next Rajinikanth, the next South Indian superstar. As Tajou grew older and the burdens of reality started to weigh heavy on his dreams, Tajou started to lose glimpse of the once brightly shining future of stardom he had hoped so desperately for. Until one day… 

Kuvera and Nelson Sivalingam’s The Rajini Effect tells the quirky tale of Tajou and his 50-year-old co-conspirator / budding filmmaker friend Ramu as they embark upon a journey to make Tajou the next Rajini, by winning a film competition titled ‘Tomorrow’s Superstar’. The film will be screened at the upcoming edition of IndiEarth OnScreen happening this Sunday, 15th of March at BFlat Bar, Bangalore – an evening that pays homage to out of the box cinema. Also being screened the same evening is Joshy Joseph’s award-winning film titled Status Quo – a satirical short about the cacophony that surrounds us in our modern day existences, depicted through visual and sound effects.

The next screening for the month happens on Thursday, 19th of March at Ashvita Bistro, Chennai, and features the legendary Shyam Benegal’s 1985 biography on equally iconic filmmaker Satyajit Ray. “I can’t think of anyone but Satyajit Ray as the greatest filmmaker of independent India,” Benegal has stated in a past interview. “He set a cinematic standard in a country where none existed. When he started making films, no markers existed showing the way. He created his own path. What separates the great from the rest is vision. Ray had vision. He followed it, despite the overwhelming odds. It’s never easy to create your own path. But Ray did exactly that.” The evening will also feature an audience discussion with Venkatesh Chakravarthy – Director, L V Prasad Academy.

Finally, the Root Reel in collaboration with IndiEarth OnScreen and Films Division presents Anifest 2015 – a celebration of animation films – on Tuesday, 24th of March at Alliance Francaise de Bombay. The Root Reel is a platform showcasing relevant thought-provoking films from across the world, in the constant effort to reach out to filmmakers who have captured their concerns through cinema, and who are in search of a way to share their stories with a larger audience. The evening will feature a host of renowned animation artists from different eras and from around the world, including Pramod Pati, Gitanjali Rao, Aditi Chitre, Bastien Dubois, Céline Devaux, and Abhishek Verma – to name just a few.
