Innovations in the Industry: PALM Expo and The IRA Awards 2014
On May 31st, Mumbai will witness the eighth edition of the IRA Awards (Indian Recording Arts Awards) – an awards show that honours sound engineers, sound technicians, artists and the best in the audio recording industry. Past winners of the IRA have included names like A.R. Rahman, Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal and Bickram Ghosh.
With over 250 entries submitted, competition will be stiff. This year, the Chairman of the jury is award winning music composer/producer/sound engineer and designer Kanwarjit Singh Sawhney. The awards show will be paying special homage to renowned acoustic engineer Andy Munro as well for his work over the past two decades, awarding him for ‘Global Innovation in Studio Design’. Veteran sound recordist Daman Sood will also be presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work with reputed musicians like Jagjit Singh and Abida Parveen, and for his work on several Bollywood film soundtracks.
This year, will see the introduction of new categories to the awards ceremony – including an award for Best Electronic Dance Music Production and Best Electronic Music Composition. The electronica categories have been added in recognition of the boom of Indian producers/DJs in the country, and will be judged by Mumbai based DJ Suketu. Nominees include artists like Ash Roy, Bluesanova, Dualist Inquiry, Arjun Vagale, Fuzzy Logic, and Bandish Projekt to name a few. Other awards added to the year’s categories include Best Guitarist and Best Percussionist. Yotam Agam and TJ Varghese of Clementine Studio and IndiEarth have also been nominated under the Best Recording/Mixing Studio for Live Sound category.
Every year, the IRA Awards are held alongside the PALM Expo – an international trade platform and expo for the Indian pro audio, live sound and lighting, and music production industry. Conceptualized as a platform to encourage business opportunities within the Indian music market, and now entering its 14th edition, the PALM Expo will take place between May 29th – 31st. Over 100 reputed exhibitors from the music industry will present over 1000 different types of products, and a special New Tech Zone has been set up at the event to showcase product innovations and the latest technological advancements. The expo will also include live performances, a DJ workshop, interactive conferences and seminars on innovative new technology in the industry. Watch the official video here.
