The Art of Animation: Workshops With Gitanjali Rao
Her journey started on 35mm – each line drawn with painstaking precision, every contour sketched with the utmost care and attention to detail – “You couldn’t afford to make mistakes,” she smiles, “The only way is to draw so well or make animation so well that once it went onto 35mm, you wouldn’t need to re-shoot”.
Her years of discipline, dedication and pure passion for the art form certainly paid off – renowned animation artist Gitanjali Rao has since created award winning animated masterpieces the likes of Printed Rainbow (which won three awards for Best Short Film at Cannes 2006, as well as 25 international awards), and her more recent work True Love Story (which won the Golden Conch Best Animation Film Award at MIFF 2014, and was selected for Critics Week at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in February 2014).
As part of EarthSync Academy’s ongoing mission to build creative industry infrastructure in India though quality skills development and engagement, Gitanjali will be conducting two workshops in Chennai on the art of animation. EarthSync’s educational initiative involves bringing in noted members of both the Indian and international artist community to openly share their skill sets and practical knowledge with the public. Her workshops will be held in conjunction with 140+ film screenings at the IndiEarth Animation Film Festival, June 26th – 28th 2015, held in association with Alliance Francaise of Madras and the Goethe Institut. The festival, now in its second edition, pays homage to the art of animation and features a diverse selection of established and upcoming animation artists from across India, France, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Japan and a host of other countries. During the festival, Gitanjali will also host a Skype Q & A conversation with renowned German animation film producer and director Thomas Meyer-Hermann, whose award winning animation The Creation will also be screened at the festival.
