WOMEX 2016: Music Beyond Borders
Once again, Santiago de Compostela comes alive with art, music, and film bursting at every seam of this venerable Spanish city as the 22nd edition of WOMEX takes over from October 19th – 23rd 2016. WOMEX – a world renowned networking platform for the international music industry – features a vibrant trade fair, showcase music festival, film screenings, and conference sessions designed to facilitate cultural exchange between different sectors of the arts industry.
While this year’s music festival showcases a broad palette of sounds from far reaches of the globe, the Opening Ceremony is titled “Iberians – Musical Tapas Menu” showcasing the rich cultural traditions of the Iberian peninsula. The Film Programme this year will screen eleven evocative films that delve deep into the themes of music, movements and history, with two world premieres on the cards. The Conference Programme features 17 panel sessions that engage delegates in a variety of industry relevant topics. EarthSync’s Sonya Mazumdar will chair a compelling session titled “Unspoken Censorship – how can artists and media counter it, and safely live to tell the tale?” with Simon Broughton (Songlines UK) and Daniel Brown (Freemuse/Songlines – Palestine/France).
